From Hampi to Puri: Drench in the spirit of Holi at these destinations for a unique experience
Meanwhile, the celebrations in Mathura and Vrindavan are marked by musical processions from the temple to the river banks. In the historical town of Barsana, which is said to be the village of Radha, it is celebrated as 'Lathmar Holi', where the women of the village beat the menfolk with sticks. It is believed that Lord Krishna used to visit Barsana to meet Radha and other women, and used to tease them. The ladies retaliated by beating the men with sticks - a practice that has continued over the years. If you want to skip the regular celebrations and indulge in unique festivities this year, Anuj Mukherjee, co-founder and COO, Wild Voyager, recommends a few places you can head to for a memorable experience. Hampi, Karnataka Even though South India is not known for celebrating Holi in a big way, Hampi drenches itself in colours on this day. The celebrations, however, are relatively muted. inhabitants of Hampi - also known as the 'City of Ruins' - welcome spring by drumming and dancing with utmost enthusiasm. They also adorn themselves with colours and gather along the banks of Tungabhadra river to enjoy the celebrations. The city reflects the charm of an era gone by, as one is transported back to the middle ages when one sees Holi played in the ruins of Vijayanagar Kingdom. Puri, Odisha Holi is known as Dol Purnima in the city of Puri. People celebrate by carrying out a palanquin procession of Lord Jagannath around the holy city with locals taking turns to swing the palanquin. During dusk, the milkmen (gwalas) lead the festivities. The idol of the lord is placed on a specially-erected tent called 'jhoolan mandap' and they play a local game called 'Dandi Khela'. The following morning colour is sprayed on the idol and people start playing Holi. Sweetmeats like pethas and ladoos are distributed. As the day ends, the idol is given a dip in Holi pond and restored back to the temple. Purulia, West Bengal Holi in Purulia, known as Basanta Utsav by locals, is all about witnessing great cultural celebrations. The local tribe of the city perform Chau dance, Natua dance, Darbari Jhumur on the songs of West Bengal's wandering Baul musicians making it a cheerful experience. In just two days of Holi, one can experience the vast repertoire of local art forms in all its authenticity. Anandpur Sahib, Punjab In Anandpur Sahib, one can experience the Sikh culture in totality on this day. Legend has it that the annual fair, Hola Mohalla, was started in 1701 when Guru Gobind Singh protested against the rising Mughal intolerance. Anandpur Sahib is a holy Sikh pilgrimage where Nihang warriors adorning blue robes participate in the display of gatka, wrestling, sword fights, and military exercises. It is a very unique way to celebrate the festival. Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh The City of Gods welcomes the festival of spring in its own way. Locals throng the ghats and enjoy the festival of colours with natural elements like mud and flowers. One can also see mud wrestling as a part of the festivities. Sweets like gujiya are distributed, and the locals top it up with a glass of bhaang. The bylanes of the city come to life as one can see people drenched in the spirit of the festival, dancing and singing on the streets with colours flying all around. AIADMK lodges complaints against DMK and AMMK
These vehicles should be seized and action taken against those concerned, he said in another petition. The ruling party also charged that gift articles and money had been stored in the marriage hall behind the DMK headquarters, from where they were being taken out in vehicles for distribution to voters. The petition containing this allegation urged the CEO to look into the issue and take action. "DMK president M K Stalin has been addressing campaign meetings under scorching sun. Besides, people are being brought to the campaign spot, using vehicles." These are violations of model code, one of the petitions said, pleading with the CEO to legal action against these public meetings. Alleging that media vehicles of Sun TV, owned by Maran brothers, were being used for distribution of money to voters in Central Chennai where Dayanidhi Maran is contesting as DMK candidate, said yet another petition, demanding legal action by Election Commission. In the petition against AMMK, Murugavel alleged that AMMK functionaries were distributing gift articles kept in the 'Gift Pack' symbol allotted to that party. To prevent this, the CEO should direct the AMMK to use the portrait of the symbol instead of using the gift pack itself during campaign. David Gower opens up in a candid chat
ou were saying you are back in Calcutta after a very long time.I have been here many times. The first time would have been probably 1981-82 and there are lots of fond memories from then. Then I have come as a player, a commentator and now as a narrator. What is the most prominent memory of Eden Gardens in your mind?In a way, just the sheer size of Eden Gardens stadium and with that size and with the immense interest.. In those days, Test cricket was the thing. And the place was pretty full. Just looking around that stadium and looking around everywhere. just to how far back it went, just to see the number of people there. the noise, the oranges. lots of things about the atmosphere that stand out. It is an still an iconic ground among the world's iconic grounds. something very special. And now when you step into Eden Gardens? With luck, we are going to see the IPL game, which will be very different for me. I have not been to an IPL game live at all. I have not been asked to work on IPL, not been here to commentate. We watch it back in the UK, of course. And it has become what it is. To see what it feels like to be in the stadium in IPL will be another step. I am sure it'll be buzzing tonight.Do you enjoy the format?I confess I am best with things like Test cricket. I am still a very strong proponent of Test cricket, but I learnt a lesson many years ago, ignore progress at your peril. So, I am very instant to adopt and adapt to the new forms of the game. So, it's now what 10-12 years that you've had an IPL game, seems it's like just two minutes, but it's strong, vibrant and it's a big part of the international calendar now. I think one of the great things about it is that it exposes so many more players to the pressure of playing with a big crowd. So, I think, for the Indian players, it's brilliant, it's part of their education. For all the guys who come from overseas, some of them are already used to it, but from what they tell me, IPL feels different again. So, who are you supporting?I think it's safe to sound neutral. Since I am being hosted in Calcutta, I should support KKR, at least for one night, but to be fair, I don't think I am going to go home and sign up as a registered member of KKR! (Smiles)How much of IPL do you watch back home?I see bits. If I may confess, I am not very good at watching sport a lot on television at home because I have other things to do. If I am working for Sky (Sports), for a Test match, I love it and if I am elsewhere, at home, there are always things that I am told I have to do.Like what? One's own social life, responsibilities, wife and family, the house, the garden..So, give us a glimpse of your daily life...Daily life can be anything. For instance, daily life can be very mundane, very staid, very dull. When I am in Calcutta or something like this, being feted by people, very friendly like this, this is not daily life. This is very different. When I am working. I have somehow managed to stay in cricket for 40 years. as a player and broadcaster..Somehow?! People really look up to you. When they do it's nice and when they don't, it's not so nice. I think I like to be called an icon, but I don't ask for it.Who would you pay to watch? There are the very obvious ones like Virat Kohli and Kane Williamson, Chris Gayle, Joe Root, Jos Buttler. it's quite a long list of players I'd happily watch. So, it's a combination of power and skill for you.Chris Gayle is the ultimate power man! All that comes with skill. Someone like Jos Buttler has more finesse to him and Kohli has everything. Some are pugilists, some are artists and some like Virat can bridge everything. I am not just playing to the audience if I say he is probably the best player in the world today. He is!Do you think he will break all records?I don't know. He has a long way towards doing it. The thing about breaking records is that it also takes time, but he is not wasting time and he produces runs every time. He is already one of the greats, and by the time he finishes, which ain't soon, he will be right up there.Who are your all-time favourites? The most awesome batsman I played against is probably Viv Richards, who gave me a lot of trouble, gave us a lot of trouble far too often. I like him a lot. He was a very proud individual. Very proud of his heritage, his country, his region. And he was driven by all those things as much as any sense of personal gain. Then there were people like Allan Border of Australia whom I've always counted as a friend as much as an adversary. In days gone by, you had the time to make friendships, to learn about people, to respect them, to get to like them, to get to dislike them if you wanted to. That was all part of the fun. That was all part of the game. I don't know how much necessarily that goes in the same way today, but then you have things like IPL which brings in people from all around the world and enemies become friends and play in the same side. So, we get some of that, which is a new way of doing it. Have you ever disliked anybody?I have liked people less. I find that's just a waste of energy.Don't you think there is too much cricket right now?The problem with cricket now is there is a lot of cricket, but not enough time. It's quite interesting to watch how players both manage their own careers and how they are managed by their respective boards. At least nowadays there are chances to rest and people are managed in that way. If the work gets too heavy, they are allowed to take a break. But when you watch AB de Villiers taking a break for a couple of years, and then playing a little bit of Test cricket and a little bit of One Day, the obvious conclusion to draw from that is there is a lot of pressure....Virat is a new breed. He is so much stronger and fitter. Take Indian cricket 10 years ago and compare the standard of fitness of players from then to now, it's already very very different. That has been a very important part of the way in which Indian cricket has developed and the way the team has developed.Who were your friends in the Indian team?Sunny (Sunil Gavaskar) I have a lot of respect for. Very shrewd, little character. I have had wine with him, I have eaten with him, I have enjoyed his company. People like Sourav (Ganguly), we didn't play against each other but I have had a few chats with him over the years. From my early days here, Kapil (Dev)... great player... I used to like Syed Kirmani... I used to talk to him when he was behind stumps. Dilip Vengsarkar.. And, Ravi... Ravi Shastri... he has looked after us when we have come to India. He has been a very good host, especially when we've been in Mumbai. It's been a friendly experience.Do you have a fave stadium in the world?Across the world, I guess Lord's. It has always been special. I used to love playing in Sydney. And I had a better record at the Oval. In terms of our pitches in the UK, that was one of the best pitches for a long time in the '80s. A bit of pace and a bit of bounce, unusual for England that time. I love the atmosphere of all the grounds I played here in India. I always say to people when you are playing with a crowd, for or against you... it's a very good test if you are in the right or wrong career. If you enjoy that, you are in the right career. If it feels like pressure, then you are probably in the wrong career. As a tourist, is there an Indian city you connect with a lot?As a player, you have less time. As a commentator, when I have visited before, I have taken time to go to places if there were four-five days between games. One of my great passions in this country is tiger reserves. So, when I first came here, we went to Kanha (National Park). During my second visit, I went to Ranthambore (National Park). That's one of the things I value a lot about this country. When we were here (Calcutta) first, we used to stay in the same hotel, which is then as now, the grand dame of Calcutta (The Oberoi Grand). When we first came here, we were always entertained at The Tollygunge Club, which probably was and still is a lovely contrast to a lot of what you see in central Calcutta. We used to have good times there. Cricket has its own culture in India which I appreciate, understand and enjoy. We have to ask you about the World Cup. Who would you pick if you were the captain?I think England are deservedly favourites. India is a very close second. Virat, of course, he can be in any team. There are some of the Indian bowlers. (Jasprit) Bumrah, Bhuvi (Bhuvneshwar Kumar) whom I'll probably have. some of the English players like Buttler whom I'd definitely have... Jason Roy, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Eoin Morgan.. I'll have Eoin Morgan as captain. I am a very big fan of his and he understands the One Day game especially. I think he has sort of eyes that drill into you.Blue eyes like yours?!His drill better than mine. Eye targets Theresa May as UK faces abyss
Research by the British Chambers of Commerce suggested that exports, orders, investment and cash flow were all being hit by the uncertainty over Brexit, as well as rising business costs and a slowing global economy. Its director general Dr Adam Marshall said: "Our findings should serve as a clear warning that the ongoing impasse at Westminster is contributing to a sharp slowdown in the real economy across the UK. Business is hitting the brakes - hard."These are some of the weakest figures we've seen in nearly a decade, and that's no coincidence. The prospect of a messy and disorderly exit from the EU is weighing heavily on the UK economy, and must still be avoided."On Tuesday May convened a lengthy "crisis meeting" of her cabinet to find a way forward, following Monday night's rejection by the Commons of four motions aimed at finding a compromise. Last week eight motions were rejected.A call for a customs' union after Brexit, tabled by the former Tory chancellor Ken Clarke, was defeated by just three votes on Monday evening. A referendum on any deal was rejected by 12 votes, and the Common Market 2.0 plan, tabled by former Tory minister Nick Boles, lost by 21 votes.Boles left the chamber after making a dramatic statement in a voice choked with emotion: "I have given everything to an attempt to find a compromise that can take this country out of the European Union while maintaining our economic strength and our political cohesion. I accept I have failed. I have failed chiefly because my party refuses to compromise. I regret, therefore, to announce I can no longer sit for this party."While some on the Opposition benches applauded, one MP could be heard saying: "Oh Nick, don't go, come on."He later tweeted that would now "sit as an independent progressive Conservative".A fourth motion, cancelling Brexit to prevent a no-deal scenario, was defeated by 101 votes. The "indicative" votes by MPs was taken after another unruly night in the Commons, with semi-naked climate change protesters having to be forcibly ejected by security guards.MPs have control of proceedings in the Commons for a third round of indicative voting on Wednesday. It Britain chooses to remain closely aligned to the customs union and the Single Market, it will probably preclude any free trade agreement with countries such as India.May now has until 12 April - Brexit Day - to seek a longer extension to the negotiation process to avoid a no-deal Brexit on that date. On April 10, there will be an emergency summit of EU leaders to consider any UK request for a further extension. Speaking in Brussels, EU chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier said: "If the UK parliament does not vote in favour of the withdrawal agreement in the coming days only two options would remain. Leaving without an agreement or requesting a longer extension of the Article 50 period."European parliament Brexit coordinator Guy Verhofstadt said that Wednesday, when MPs may have a third attempt at reaching a majority through indicative voting, was the "last chance to break the deadlock or face the abyss".The EU warned on Tuesday that Britain could be heading for a potentially disorderly exit in just 10 days time as May met ministers to thrash out ways to break the protracted the Brexit deadlock. The impasse has already delayed Brexit for at least two weeks. Women's group in Chennai bats for dual-member system in general elections
After the election is over, two representatives - one from general category and another from SC/STs - would be sent to Parliament. This system was abolished through a legislation in 1961 by allocating separate constituencies for these communities. However, now the BSS has said the revival of dual-member constituencies for the sake of providing equal representation to women would be a welcome measure. In July 2009, activists from many women's organisations spearheaded by the BSS demanded amendment to the Women's Reservation Bill to convert all seats of the Lok Sabha and Assemblies into dual-member constituencies to elect one man and one woman each. So, these women organisations suggested that 543 women and 543 men could be elected to the Lok Sabha without changing the number of boundaries of the existing constituencies. These organisations have pointed out that implementation of 33 per cent reservation for women would mean that it would deny opportunities to 33 per cent of men. But, if all 543 seats in the Lok Sabha are made dual-member ones, an equal number of men and women will be there and the number of male members would not come down in Parliament. Dr KS Jayashree, national president of the BSS, told Express, "In 2009, the BSS and many other women's organisations submitted our recommendations to the Centre. But there was no initiative to take forward our suggestion." A recall of the history behind this dual-member constituency system will be interesting. In the 1951-52 Lok Sabha elections, the erstwhile Madras had seven dual-member constituencies - Thiruvallur, Vellore, Erode, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, Tindivanam and Madurai. In 1956, new States were carved out on the basis of language and ethnicity. The Madras State (the present Tamil Nadu) had 34 Lok Sabha constituencies including Chengalpattu, Vellore, Chidambaram, Nagapattinam, Srivilliputhur, Dindigul and Namakkal. From 1967, the number of LS constituencies has gone up to 39 and all of them have remained single-member constituencies till now. In 1957, the Congress was routed in Andhra Pradesh when its nominee VV Giri, former Union Labour Minister, who later became the President of the country, was defeated in the Parvathipuram double-member constituency by a narrow margin of 565 votes. Though Giri polled more votes than his rival in the general constituency, two reserved category candidates won the seat as their votes had exceeded those secured by candidates from general category. Giri moved the court, arguing that the reserved category candidates should only be allowed to contest the ST seat, but his appeal was dismissed. Following this, the Congress government brought in the Two-Member Constituency (Abolition) Act, 1961 and all constituencies were made single-member ones. Mystic Mantra: Meditation for the inner centering
It is a Sufi whirling meditation — learning the art of whirling consciously and settling into consciousness. He himself experimented and found himself — in the centre of his being. Osho tells us that, 'Sufi whirling is one of the most ancient techniques, one of the most forceful. It is so deep that even a single experience can make you totally different. Whirl with open eyes, just like small children go on twirling, as if your inner being has become a centre and your whole body has become a wheel, moving, a potter's wheel, moving. You are in the centre, but the whole body is moving.' This meditation technique is done in three stages — First Stage: 45 minutes — Whirling. Keep your eyes open and feel the centre point of your body. Lift your arms to shoulder height, with the right hand palm up and the left-hand low, palm down. Start turning around at one point — at your own axis. Let your body be soft. Start slowly and after 15 minutes gradually go faster and faster. You become a whirlpool of energy — the periphery a storm of movement but the witness at the centre silent and still. Gradually your eyes de-focus and the surroundings will become a whirl. As you move faster, you become more still inside. Second Stage: 15 minutes. Let your body fall to the ground. Roll onto your stomach immediately so that your navel is in contact with the earth. Feel your body blending into the earth. Keep your eyes closed and remain passive and silent. Third Stage: Celebration. Gradually, get up and join the celebration dance if you feel or sit still if you want. Osho gives the example of children doing this naturally in their childhood. He says: 'When a small child goes on whirling he loses the sense of being a body, he starts hovering above his body, he can see his own body turning — and that is the miracle of the method. But we are stopped by our parents very early.' Mevlana Rumi himself became enlightened by 36 hours of continuous whirling; day in, day out he went on and on. He was riding on a cloud, he could not stop till he fell down. But when he opened his eyes and got up he was a totally new man, the old was gone. Swami Chaitanya Keerti, editor of Osho World, is the author of Mindfulness: The Master Key ... In UP's Maharajganj, it's daughter vs daughter of two influential families
The political debut by two women candidates, both belonging to influential political families in east UP has made the Maharajganj seat contest interesting, while the sitting BJP MP Pankaj Chowdhary is confident of winning the seat a sixth time. Earlier, he won the seat in 1991, 1996, 1998, 2004 and 2014. In 2009, Pankaj faced defeat at the hand of Harshwardhan Singh, who had won his first election from the seat on a Janta Dal ticket way back in 1989. His daughter, Srinet, a TV anchor, is tasked with wresting the seat back from the BJP. On Sunday, before moving to Mahrajganj by road, Srinet took a brief halt on way to Gorakhpur, where she spoke to reporters. Srinet cited the prevailing condition in the country as the reason for joining politics after working for long in the media. When asked about Rahul Gandhi's decision to contest from Amethi as well as Waynad in Kerala this time, she was quick to attack PM Modi for contesting elections from two seats in 2014. 'I am very glad to have been fielded from Maharajganj which has been my father's karmbhoomi, not for five or 10 years but for 41 years. Also, I have been given a big responsibility by Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi and I am pretty confident that I will stand by the expectation of my party. I will try and follow in the footprints of my father,' she said, and refused to comment on Tanushree Tripathi and her father Amarmani Tripathi, saying that more than her, the locals know about them and she didn't want to indulge in any controversy by making any comment. However, Srinet slammed BJP MP Pankaj Chwodhary saying, 'He has been an MP for five terms but no development has taken place in any of his tenures, not even in 2017, when he his party was in power at the Centre as well as in the State. The Railway line for Mahrajganj, proposal of which was passed during my father's tenure, has not come up till today. Mahrajganj would have seen some development, had Pankaj Chowdhary taken forward the work done by my father. When contacted, Tanushree Tripathi, representing Shivpal Yadav's Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party, also possesses a Master's degree from London, dismissed Srinet, saying she was just a parachute candidate, little known in her own village. She bet that Srinet would lose her deposit. 'She is an anchor in an English channel which, is not watched in Maharajganj. Nobody in her own village, including next-door neighbours, know her. I don't know which political legacy of her father she speaks about, as Harshwardhan ji represented the seat for one time in 2009 and after that he lost by 50,000 votes. Also, there is a revolt among Congress workers, who know that she will get not more than 10,000 votes. Secondly, being a sitting MP and BJP leader, he will certainly put up a fight but it's me who will win. Chowdhary is facing the ire of locals for not doing work in 25-year tenure. 'In Mahrajganj, which shares a border with Nepal and is part of the Buddha circuit, we don't have a single hotel for tourists to stay. Besides, the farmers are suffering because all five sugar mills are lying closed,' said Tanushree, who shot into light during the 2017 assembly election when she extensively campaigned for her brother Amanmani Tripathi, who fought from jail and won by over 34,000 votes as an independent candidate at a time when BJP clean-swept UP with 73 out of 80 seats. Tanushree is all set to enter wedlock on April 20. Over 18.5 lakh voters will exercise their franchise to elect their representative. Pakistan bans IPL broadcast, says India 'harming' cricket in the country
"India made an organised effort to harm cricket in Pakistan and it doesn't make sense for us to allow an Indian domestic tournament to be promoted here," he said, pointing out that the official Indian broadcaster pulled out of the fourth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) in the middle of the tournament after the Pulwama attack "to harm the league and cricket" in Pakistan. In February, DSport -- the official broadcasters of the PSL in India -- stopped the coverage of the tournament in protest of the Pulwama attack that killed 40 CRPF personnel. Indian company IMG Reliance also pulled out of its deal to produce the television coverage of the PSL worldwide forcing the Pakistan-based T20 league to find a new production company midway into the tournament. Chaudhry said the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) would ensure that no IPL match is aired in Pakistan. He said the Pakistan government believes that sports and culture should not be politicised, but India adopted an aggressive posture against Pakistani players and artists. ... Farah Khan: You're not obligated to make social commentary through your art
Whether they want to speak about something or highlight a cause,' Farah told PTI. 'Not everyone is vocal, fiery and feisty. If you feel like doing it, you come out and do it,' she added. The director, however, said films as a medium have often tackled societal stigmas on screen and now with the boom in OTT platform, there are more opportunities. 'To a great extent, Bollywood films do their bit. A film like 'Taare Zameen Par', for example, helped create awareness. Now we have a series of platforms too so we should do it.' She was speaking on the sidelines of the 75th-anniversary celebration of Jai Vakeel Foundation on World Autism Day. Farah said it's extremely important to create awareness regarding intellectual disability in the country where it's considered a huge stigma. 'The awareness regarding autistic children's need is missing in our country. According to last year's data, almost two-three per cent of our population is mentally challenged, which means two and a half crores. Do we see them in the cinema halls, parks, malls? 'Because the stigma is tremendous. The awareness that they need to be included in what we call a 'normal' society is needed. Maybe next time I'll do a dance workshop for these kids because they love arts, painting and dancing,' she added. Fly me to the Moon: Isro to pick 100 astronauts
"Of course, we want a woman to be part of the first crew," he added, "but it depends on the procedures of selection and training." He said those who make the final cut would join the space agency as a member of staff in order to get familiar with the first mission to space, the experiments to be carried out during the seven-day outing in space, and get hands-on experience of technologies involved in 'Gaganyaan'. The training schedule - in two phases - would be worked out by the IAF's Institute of Aerospace Medicine (IAM) in Bengaluru while the last phase would be conducted in collaboration with Russian or French space agencies. "Three of our people (ISRO) have visited aerospace medicine facilities in France but we have not signed any agreement with CNES (the French space agency) as other countries like Russia have also offered to help us during the last phase of training," he added. Expressing confidence that ISRO would be able to accomplish the mission in December 2021, six months ahead of the date announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Dr Sivan said a number of reviews, including one at the national level by renowned experts, the IAF, academia, and DRDO labs, have been completed on the crew module and the launch vehicle. Besides, six space-based experiments have been picked - four related to biology and two to engineering - for the first unmanned flight of the crew module scheduled for December 2020. The space agency would be ready for the second unmanned flight of the crew module in July 2021, he added. On Jan 30, ISRO opened the Human Space Flight Centre at its headquarters in Bengaluru. It has been tasked with implementation of the 'Gaganyaan' project, which involves planning of the mission, and development of engineering systems for survival of the crew in space. It would also support activities for sustained human space flight missions. ... EC's decision on reserve EVMs in Madhya Pradesh raises questions
Sagar Division Congress spokesperson Virendra Gour said if unused reserve EVMs are kept in the district headquarters any irregularity can be easily caught. But who will track them if they are sent to Bhopal where thousands of other EVMs are also going to come at the same time. 'We have demanded that the EVMs should be kept under our eyes at the district headquarters,' Gour said, adding that the EC should stick to the old policy. Outlining the likely problems, an official involved in the election process who did not want to be named said, 'Usually polling continues till 6 pm and afterward used machine are locked, collected, loaded and sent to a strong room which continues till early hours of the next day. Now at the same time, we will have to collect the unused reserve EVMs sent them to Bhopal which will be cumbersome for us.' Damoh Collector and district returning officer Neeraj Singh said that the EC's order will be followed and he has not received any objection from political parties in this regard. Sources said that this decision was taken because of the problems faced during the Assembly elections and EVMs/VVPATs reaching respective district headquarters and Bhopal days after polls ended leading to allegations that the EVMs/VVPATs had been manipulated. For example, in Khurai, Sagar district, the EVMs reached the strong room 48 hours after elections ended and the returning officer was sacked. Chief election officer V L Kantha Rao said transporting them won't be an issue. 'There is adequate security personnel to escort them to Bhopal,' he said. CEO Rao said the EC ordered the centralised storage of unused reserved EVMs/VVPATs because it would be easier to transport EVMs if required in another place. 'This policy won't have an impact in Madhya Pradesh where elections are in the last four phases, therefore, the possibility of EVMs going from the state to other places is minimum, but in places where elections are in the early phases there is a possibility that they could be used in other states.' Lok Sabha elctions 2019: Congress's 150-day NREGA job pledge may be tough to fulfil
Today, everyone knows how much it helped the country. So, now we want to guarantee jobs for 150 days, instead of 100 days, under the scheme,' Congress president Rahul Gandhi said, unveiling the party manifesto. But experts believe the Congress might find it difficult to give up to 150 days of assured jobs. 'No district so far has been able to provide all of its beneficiaries 100 days of jobs. Only a handful of blocks might have reached saturation,' said a senior official of the rural development ministry, who asked not to be named. The official also explained that since the job scheme is the last source of income during distress, people always try to find more lucrative jobs, making it difficult for the government to reach saturation in the districts. Government data shows that since 2006, barely 10-15% of the eligible families have got 100 days of work in a year. In 2018-19, out of the 5.25 crore households that worked under the scheme, just 49 lakh families completed 100 days. In the drought year of 2015-16, out of 4.8 crore families working under MGNREGA, just 48.47 lakh got full 100 days of jobs. 'In West Bengal, the best performing state in MGNREGA, districts could give beneficiaries 70-80 days of jobs,' the official cited above said. Another official pointed out that 'it is more important to see that more families and people get some jobs instead of providing full 100 days of work to select families'. Economist Abhirup Sarkar said there is also a problem of lack of appropriate work. 'How long can people be asked to dig soil and do such works? The work is limited in MGNREGA,' said Sarkar, a professor with Indian Statistical Institute. While the Congress spoke about using MGNREGA labour in the restoration of waterbodies and the wasteland regeneration, official data shows that already the highest share of the rural job is used for water conservation-related work. Almost 42% of the MGNREGA work is used in this sector, government data shows. In the past few years, the government has also allowed MGNREGA labour in the construction of houses under the PM Awas Yojana, resulting in a steep rise in rural jobs. The Congress also promised that it will use the flagship programme to build public assets such as primary health centres, classrooms and libraries. Government officials said public asset creation is given high priority in the scheme and the rate of completion of assets in MGNREGA was highest in 2018-19 since its rollout. Praveen Chakravarty, head of Congress's data analytics department who was involved in preparing the manifesto, said, 'Please remember that MGNREGA is a demand-based programme. What we said is that if in extreme distress, someone asks for more work, we will provide him or her and not deny him under the pretext of the existing law.' Disillusioned, divided cadre behind BJP bypoll loss
NEW DELHI: Though BJP leaders tried to play down the defeat in Gorakhpur and Phulpur bypolls many accept that it has come as a huge embarrassment and the reason for the loss is not just the SP-BSP tie-up but a host of factors including intraparty equations that have led to this outcome. The Brahmin-Thakur rivalry in the Gorakhpur region unit of BJP is said to be a big reason for the party not fighting the bypoll unitedly. While the candidate Upendra Shukla was chosen by the central leadership the onus of ensuring his victory was on both Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and the other faction. The CM held almost two dozen rallies in the constituency but the party cadre did not participate actively in these campaigns. Sources said since BJP chief Amit Shah and his core team were not involved in the campaign the workers at the state and the constituency levels took it easy. Over confidence and complacency seem to have played a key role in the defeat. The low turnout in both the constituencies was the first indication for BJP leaders that it has done badly in the elections. The party has done badly even in the urban assembly segments which are a stronghold of the BJP. The BJP workers had high expectations but are now getting somewhat disillusioned as the ministers in the UP government are not accessible and their grievances are not addressed a party office bearer said. Though Yogi Adityanath has announced several sops for his Lok Sabha constituency over the last one year his failure to ensure victory on his turf has been a bigger embarrassment for him. He accepted that local factors were responsible for the disappointing outcome which has been read by the party as an indication of the party office-bearers working at cross https://able2know.org/user/kkarf/ purpose during the campaign. The party is now concerned about cadre disenchantment costing it dear in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The SP-BSP tie-up (with Congress also likely to join in) would mean consolidation of around 45-50% of the votes. In a threecornered contest a candidate needs only around 30%votes to win. With the opposition having drawn lessons from the 2014 elections it is unlikely that it will play into the hands of the BJP. It would suit the opposition to take the elections to the caste equation and not let BJP polarise it. BJP will have to take the outcome seriously and not dismiss it as a mere defeat in a bypoll that would have no bearing on the Lok Sabha seats in UP.
Mumbai: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party s tally may drop by 100-110 seats in the next Lok Sabha polls in 2019 if the current trends and the results of the recent bypolls are an indicator its ally Shiv Sena said in a gloomy prediction on Friday. The twin wins by the Samajwadi Party in BJP bastions like Gorakhpur and Phulpur has created panic in the BJP camp even as they were busy celebrating the party s victory in a small state like Tripura last week the Sena said in a tough edit in the party mouthpieces Saamana (Marathi) and Dopahar Ka Saamana (Hindi).Though the BJP claims that by-elections do not reflect the mood of the country ever since Prime Minister Narendra Modi took over the party has lost nearly nine seats in Lok Sabha by-polls slashing its tally from 282 to around 272 - the half-way mark in the 543-strong Lower House the editorial said. It was barely a year ago that the BJP won the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls creating a record by winning 325 seats. The saffron-clad Yogi Adityanath who has never lost the Gorakhpur seat since 1991 became the state Chief Minister. So despite the huge popularity they enjoyed why was their citadel shattered the Sena wondered. It could be said that in 2014 there was a huge wave of popularity and water had blocked the eyes and ears of the masses leading to BJP s victory but now the wave has receded and people can see everything clearly the edit said. The BJP is now blaming poor voter turnout lack of enthusiasm or a deal between the Samajwadi Party with Bahujan Samaj Party for its rout in the two critical seats in Uttar Pradesh. Since 2014 how many deals has the BJP entered into for power... What about Naresh Agrawal who was inducted in BJP with such fanfare? In Tripura the BJP could win only after the entire Congress and Trinamool Congress merged with it the Sena pointed out.Referring to the polls the Sena said the SP candidates secured big margins in both Gorakhpur and Phulpur indicating that the people went out of the way to defeat the BJP in both seats which were won with huge margins of two-three lakh votes in 2014.On the winning spree of the Rashtriya Janata Dal in Bihar s Jehanabad and Araria the Sena said some BJP leaders were living in a fool s paradise as they attributed it to a sympathy wave for the jailed RJD President Lalu Prasad Yadav. Comments Lalu is in jail for corruption... and that could be a politics of vendetta. Despite that if he can get sympathy then it s a big blow to both Nitish Kumar and Modi... The outcome has thrown down the BJP from the sky to the ground the Sena said. Amidst all this it is clear now that in 2019 the BJP s numbers will not be 280 but it will plummet by at least 100-110 seats. The elections are not being fought in Russia America Canada France or Israel but in India. So they (BJP) should keep their feet on the ground here the Sena warned.

NEW DELHI: The victory of regional parties in the recent bypolls in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar has rung alarm bells for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). However it isn t a very good news for the Congress either. Though the party cheered the defeat of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) hopeful of the NDA slowly losing ground before the next Lok Sabha elections the results bring little for it to celebrate. The surprise sweep by the alliance between Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in Gorakhpur and Phulpur bypolls no doubt indicates viability of a joint front of opposition parties against the NDA. The Congress has already been trying to cobble up such a front. A day before the results United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi hosted leaders of 20 opposition parties to mull over a joint front against the BJP in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections next year. But the dismal showing by the Congress and resurgence of regional parties in these elections will increase bargaining power of these parties in a joint front. The revival of regional parties means the Congress will lose its predominant position in the opposition space. The results will boost confidence of the SP BSP and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). These parties will set their own terms for the joint front. The Congress has projected its president Rahul Gandhi as an alternative to Prime Minister Narendra Modi with some success. Rahul emerged as a serious challenger in the Gujarat assembly elections in which the BJP saw erosion of its voter base. The Congress would want other opposition leaders to defer to Rahul in a joint alliance. However encouraged by the bypoll results Akhilesh Yadav Mayawati and Tejaswi Yadav may not allow projection of Rahul as the prime-ministerial candidate. Nor will an ambitious Mamata Banerjee like that prospect. The Gujarat elections had boosted Rahul s image and he was expected to be a dominant leader of an opposition alliance. With the resurgence of regional parties Rahul may get reduced to being just one of the many opposition leaders in a joint front against NDA. Telangana Rashtra Samithi head K Chandrashekhar Rao and Mamata Banerjee have even talked about a non-Congress front of opposition parties against the NDA indicating that these leaders do not want to play a second fiddle to the Congress. Even if the Congress is able to cobble up an opposition alliance it can no longer expect to be the chief arbiter. Assertive regional parties will not just set the terms of a joint front with the Congress but will also have more bargaining power for seat-sharing arrangements with it. If the opposition front defeats the ruling NDA in the next Lok Sabha elections and the Congress wins fewer seats than main opposition parties such as the BSP SP or Trinamool Congress Rahul Gandhi s dream of becoming the prime minister might get deferred indefinitely. That prize can go to the largest opposition party. The victory of SP-BSP alliance and the RJD has come just when Rahul s projection as the main opposition leader was steadily growing through his public speeches and statements on social media. That exercise boosted by the Congress performance in the Gujarat elections may now run out of steam.
The BJP is pulling out all the stops to deny Mayawati s Bahujan Samaj Party a seat in the Rajya Sabha turning the upcoming elections in Uttar Pradesh into a big political battle reminiscent of the Rajya Sabha election of Congress leader Ahmed Patel from Gujarat last year. With 324 MLAs of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance and 37 needed to win one seat the party can secure eight Rajya Sabha seats from the state with 28 votes to spare. However UP BJP spokesman Rakesh Tripathi said the BJP is extremely determined to win the ninth Rajya Sabha seat . UP BJP spokesman Chandra Mohan said MLAs across party lines will vote for development and considering people s mood for BJP. The BJP s strategy involves bringing all three independent MLAs on its side including Raja Bhaiyya (a known adversary of Mayawati) and Amanmani Tripathi opening talks with Samajwadi Party leader Shivpal Yadav and his loyal MLAs to ensure they don t vote for the BSP and getting an MLA of the NISHAD party and one of Rashtriya Lok Dal parties which backed SP or BSP during the recent bypolls on its side as well. All three independents Shivpal Yadav some SP MLAs and the NISHAD MLA had voted for the BJP during last year s presidential polls. Instead of 324 votes of the NDA MLAs Ram Nath Kovind had got 335 votes due to the cross-voting. The same is expected to be the case in the ninth seat of the Rajya Sabha polls too a senior BJP functionary in the state told ET on condition of anonymity. He said this strategy is expected to ensure that the BSP candidate Bhimrao Ambedkar will stop short of getting 37 MLA votes that would guarantee him a Rajya Sabha seat. He is presently at 36 MLA votes after the son of Naresh Agarwal an SP MLA yesterday (Monday) decided to vote for our candidate. The count will go down further as voting day nears. Second preference votes will then come into the picture and our candidate will sail through the senior BJP functionary said. SP can get its candidate Jaya Bachchan elected with 37 out of its 47 MLAs and shift 10 of its votes to the BSP which has 19 MLAs. The Congress has also pledged support of its seven MLAs to the BSP. That will take the BSP tally to 36 votes and it is expected to get the vote of the RLD MLA as well to sail through with a figure of 37. But on Monday SP leader Naresh Agarwal joined the BJP and his son an SP MLA declared he would vote for the BJP bringing down the BSP figure to 36. Vijay Mishra the Nishad MLA will vote for BJP so will the three independents. The RLD MLA from Chaprauli may also shift to the BJP camp a BJP leader said. Tripathi said that the SP MLAs of the Shivpal Yadav camp might also vote for the BJP. BSP votes did not get transferred to the SP during the bypolls and the results will show that on March 14. SP MLAs enthusiasm to vote for the BSP will hence wane while voting for Rajya Sabha seats. SP would also like to keep some spare votes for its candidate Jaya Bachchan and not transfer all its nine spare MLA votes to the BSP he said.
In a blow to the Opposition in Uttar Pradesh senior Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Naresh Agarwal joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Agarwal addressed a press conference on Monday along with Union minister Piyush Goyal and announced his entry into the BJP. Agarwal in his address to media persons said he is influenced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath. India is on the path to development under Narendra Modi he added. His son Nitin has also joined the BJP. File image of Naresh Agarwal. PTI Speaking about the SP Agarwal said that the party has lost its way in recent times. He also added I have no preconditions for joining the BJP. Please do not say that I am joining the party as I am hopeful of a Rajya Sabha seat or something of that nature. Piyush Goyal said that under the chief ministership of Yogi Adityanath Uttar Pradesh has seen a new era of development. The BJP has emerged as the only alternative for the people and the party is changing the face of the country. I held discussions with Agarwal about his joining the BJP and so did (party president) Amit Shah. Last week the SP named Jaya Bachchan as its Rajya Sabha nominee overlooking Agarwal according to a report in Financial Express. In January 2017 Agarwal refuted reports of his joining the BJP alleging that the party was spreading rumours due to its fear of losing voters among traders as per a PTI report carried by Economic Times Before the 2014 Lok Sabha elections Agarwal in a controversial dig at Narendra Modi said that someone who had worked at a tea shop can never have a national perspective The Times of India reported.
NEW DELHI: The stellar performance of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the recent state elections in Tripura Nagaland and Meghalaya is a landmark for a party which had little traction in the region except in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The party never had any significant connect with the masses and was seen as an outsider. What changed the situation? BJP president Amit Shah in his first press conference after the results credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi s Act East policy for the upsurge in fortunes. Modi s Act East policy included a big push for road and railway infrastructure and various steps to boost the regional economy. While most of the infrastructural projects are at various stages of completion Modi s northeast agenda created a rhetoric of inclusiveness that helped bring the masses closer to the BJP. Below are a few important initiatives by the Modi government that may have made the BJP acceptable to the northeast voters: The railways push Before a metre-gauge line started in 2008 Tripura didn t have any railway link with the rest of the country. The Modi government converted it into broad gauge. All over the region the government has converted 900 km of tracks to broad gauge. It also launched a Rajdhani Express and the Tripura Sundari Express between Agartala and Delhi. In 2016 then railways minister Suresh Prabhu laid the foundation stone for the Rs 2 315 crore 88-km Dhansiri-Kohima railway track connecting Kohima to the national railway network. The government also began railway projects to connect Imphal Aizawl and Shillong. It has introduced more than two dozen new trains in the region. It also signed a deal with Bangladesh to develop a rail link between Tripura and Chittagong which would speed up flow of products especially grains to the region. Roads and highways Modi has branded his policy to build infrastructure in northeast as Transformation by Transportation . Lack of connectivity has been a major roadblock in the economic progress on the region. Modi s promise of connectivity resonates with the masses. More than 3 800 km of national highways with an investment of Rs. 32 000 crore have been sanctioned in the region in the past three years while nearly 1 200 km of roads have been constructed according to the government. In a public announcement in December last year Modi said the centre would invest another Rs. 60 000 crore under the Special Accelerated Road Development Programme in the northeast and Rs. 30 000 crore under the Bharatmala project over three years. Modi also dedicated to the nation a 271-km two-lane national highway connecting Tura in western Meghalaya to the state capital Shillong last year. Air connectivity The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has allocated Rs 3 400 crore for the upgradation of airports in the North East region. According to the government projects worth Rs 934 crore have already been completed while the rest would be over in the next two or three years. The aviation projects in the northeast include re-carpeting of the runway at Silchar and Lilabari airport and an aviation manpower training institute; development of Rupsi airport; a new integrated airport and an engineering workshop at Agartala; expansion and revamp of existing terminal building and runway at Dimapur; installation of an instrument landing system (ILS) at the Shillong airport; and operationalisation and development of the Tura airport. Other projects and policies Last year Modi dedicated the 60-MW Tuirial hydropower power project which made Mizoram the third power-surplus state in the northeast to Sikkim and Tripura. The project is expected to produce 251 million units of electricity annually. Announced in 1998 by the then Atal Bihari Vajpayee government it was the first major central government project to be successfully commissioned in Mizoram. Recently the government decided to fully fund various Central projects being implemented in the northeast instead of the previous practice of sharing 90 per cent of the cost. The Modi government has also made the 1360-km long India-Myanmar-Thailand trilateral highway which is to be completed in 2020 a centerpiece of its Act East policy. Opening the northeast to the ASEAN countries the highway will boost the regional economy. In Budget 2018-19 the government re-classified bamboo from tree to grass which would enable easier cultivation for commercial purposes. Bamboo is central to the rural economy of the northeast. But Meghalaya threw up a hung Assembly with the incumbent Congress emerging as the single-largest party. With the BJP s improved performance in the Northeast it now runs governments in Manipur and Assam as well the Narendra Modi government will now need to face the challenge of delivering on the contentious Naga Accord. In Nagaland the BJP had contested the polls with the Neiphiu Rio-led Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP). On its own the BJP won a creditable 11 seats and 14.6 per cent if the votes. With its ally NDPP winning 15 seats the alliance fell short of the halfway mark. However Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said his party would form a coalition government with the Naga Peoples Front which won 27 seats four short of a majority in the 60-member Assembly. In Meghalaya the incumbent Congress won 21 seats. The National People s Party a BJP ally won 19 and the BJP won 2. The BJP improved its vote share to 9.6 per cent. However Congress leaders Kamal Nath and Ahmed Patel landed in Shillong to reach out to smaller parties to explore the possibility of forming the government and prevent a repeat of Goa and Manipur where the party had emerged the single-largest party but was beaten by a fleet-footed BJP in government formation. Until 2016 the BJP never had a government in any of the northeastern states. Efficient election management and electoral tie-ups made the BJP win the Assam Assembly polls in 2016. By the end of that year behind-the-scenes work helped it form the government in Arunachal Pradesh. While the Congress emerged the single-largest party in Manipur in the 2017 Assembly polls the BJP had reached out to smaller parties to form the government in that state. As the results trickled in on Saturday the Tripura verdict brought much cheer to the BJP leadership. It had defeated its ideological enemy the CPI (M) which has won elections successively in the state since 1993. The Congress vote share collapsed from 36.53 per cent in 2013 to 1.8 per cent. The alliance of the BJP and Indigenous People s Front of Tripura (IPFT) was on course to win 43 of the 60 seats. The BJP along with its allies will now have governments in 21 states. Where is the question of tod-phod (horse-trading). The Congress does not have a majority there he said. Shah said the wins were an endorsement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi s leadership. Assam minister and BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma said Tripura s outgoing chief minister Manik Sarkar could take shelter in West Bengal Kerala or neighbouring Bangladesh. In a statement the CPI (M) said the BJP utilised massive deployment of money and other resources to influence the elections . It said the BJP was able to consolidate all the anti-Left votes and virtually appropriated the erstwhile main opposition party the Congress. The CPI (M) politburo thanked the 45 per cent of Tripura voters who voted for the Left parties. The defeat for the CPI (M) comes at a time of an internal battle between former party chief Prakash Karat and current chief Sitaram Yechury. The party conclave in Hyderabad in the later part of April is set to discuss the party s attitude towards electoral understandings with other secular democratic parties for the Lok Sabha polls. The BJP s wins in the Northeast tie well with its plans to compensate any losses it might suffer in northern India by winning seats in some of its electorally weaker areas.

Its classification as tree meant various restrictions on its produce transport and sale.
